McLaren Breaks Red Bull's Dominance and is Crowned F1 Champion
Lando Norris (McLaren) claimed victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the twenty-fourth and final race of the Formula 1 World Championship, held at the Yas Marina Circuit. This race, which already had Max Verstappen (Red Bull) as the world champion, saw Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) bid farewell to the Maranello team in brilliant fashion, securing second place. As a result, McLaren won the Constructors' Championship with 666 points, 14 more than Ferrari, and secured their ninth championship in the sport, their first since 1998.
A season finale to remember
Norris, at 25 years old, reached his fourth victory in F1 this year, which allowed him to secure the runner-up position in the Drivers' Championship, surpassing Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) by 18 points. Sainz, on the other hand, secured his twenty-seventh podium, his twenty-fifth with Ferrari. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), the two-time world champion from Asturias, finished ninth, and Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) retired after a challenging season that raised many doubts about his future with the team.
As for the practice sessions, McLaren showed their strength from the start, dominating the Friday and Saturday tests. Norris achieved his ninth pole in F1, with his teammate Oscar Piastri (McLaren) completing the front row. On the grid, Sainz started third, while Verstappen began from the fourth position, but his day was complicated after being penalized with a ten-second penalty for an incident with Piastri.
The comeback of the season
The race was marked by intense moments of action. Leclerc made a spectacular comeback, advancing from nineteenth to third place, while Hamilton, starting from sixteenth, moved up to fourth, showcasing his ability to fight under any circumstance. However, the race was decided when Norris managed to stay ahead, making no mistakes and crossing the finish line with a nearly seven-second lead over Sainz.
With Norris' victory, McLaren secured the Constructors' title and snatched the championship from Ferrari, which had not won the title since 2008. Alonso, for his part, made it clear that 2025 will be a year of learning and preparation for the future, as the Aston Martin team will receive significant upgrades. The race also marked the retirement of Valtteri Bottas (Kick Sauber), Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo), and Kevin Magnussen (Haas), who said goodbye to F1 in this Grand Prix.
