IOC Approves Five New Sports for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Innovation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. It’s official—five sports have been added to the program for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. This decision was made at the 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The sports being added to the program are Baseball/Softball, Cricket (T20), Flag Football, Lacrosse (Sixes), and Squash. This package of sports was proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee as something exclusive for this edition of the Games, and the proposal was reviewed and supported by the IOC’s Olympic Programme Commission (OPC) and Executive Board (EB).
However, not all of these sports will be making their debut—only squash and flag football will appear in the Olympics for the first time. On the other hand, Baseball/Softball, Cricket, and Lacrosse will be making a comeback to the Olympic program.
History of these sports in the Olympic Games:
- Baseball and Softball have appeared in several Olympic Games, with the most recent being Tokyo 2020.
- Cricket was part of the program in the 1900 Olympics.
- Lacrosse (Sixes) was included in the program in 1904 and again in London 1908.
- Flag Football and Squash will make their Olympic debut, as they’ve never been included as official sports before.
