CAS Snatches Bronze from Jordan Chiles and Team USA in Gymnastics
Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu was awarded the bronze medal in floor exercise five days after the competition, following a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the scoring review for American Jordan Chiles.
Barbosu initially secured the third-best score in the floor final (13.700), earning the bronze medal behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade (14.166) and the USA’s Simone Biles (14.133).
However, Jordan Chiles, the other American finalist, contested her original score of 13.666, which had placed her in fifth. The judges accepted her appeal, bumping her score to 13.766, which moved her up two spots and knocked Barbosu off the podium.
The Romanian team then appealed to CAS, arguing that Chiles' appeal was filed beyond the one-minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) rules—specifically, at one minute and four seconds.
Barbosu was already celebrating her bronze medal when Chiles’ new score appeared on the scoreboard. Upon seeing it, the Romanian gymnast dropped her flag and started crying.
In any case, CAS states that it’s up to FIG to reassign the medals "in accordance with the decision made." The legendary gymnast Nadia Comaneci was outraged by the incident that took place in the final.
"I can't believe we're playing with the mental health and emotions of these athletes like this. We need to protect them," said Comaneci, who has lived in the United States for decades but always keeps a close eye on supporting the gymnasts from her home country.
