French Super Cup: PSG Seeks Its Own Treble Against Monaco
PSG and Monaco face off in the French Super Cup final, the so-called Trophée des Champions. The Parisians have the upper hand over the Monegasque club.
Reinstated in 1995 after a ten-year hiatus, the Trophée des Champions (French Super Cup) has spanned the past two decades marked by the dominance of Olympique Lyonnais, who won it from 2002 to 2007, and later Paris Saint-Germain, with ten victories in the past eleven years.
With 12 Trophée des Champions titles, PSG is far ahead of Lyon (8), Saint-Étienne (5), and Monaco, which sits just outside the top three with four titles earned in 1961, 1985, 1997, and 2000. Since 1995, Monaco has also lost twice in the final, both times against Paris Saint-Germain.
The match between PSG and their 2024 runner-up is an opportunity to revisit these previous encounters that favored the Parisian side.
2017: A Departing Kylian Mbappé
Crowned 2017 Ligue 1 champions ahead of PSG (winners of the Coupe de France), Monaco still boasted big names like Radamel Falcao, Thomas Lemar, and Brazilian Fabinho when they faced the Parisians in Tangier in late July 2017. Kylian Mbappé also featured in what was one of his final games for Monaco before joining PSG weeks later.
Djibril Sidibé opened the scoring with a chipped shot after a perfect assist from Youri Tielemans. However, the Parisians turned the game around with a stunning free kick from Dani Alves and a trademark header from Adrien Rabiot, securing a 2-1 victory and PSG's fifth consecutive Trophée des Champions. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, Mbappé was substituted in the 71st minute.
2018: Parisian Domination
Almost a year later, the two teams met in China on August 4, 2018, where Monaco suffered a crushing defeat. PSG, champions of both Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France, effortlessly outclassed their 2017-2018 season runners-up.
Thomas Tuchel's men sealed the game by halftime with goals from Ángel Di María and Christopher Nkunku. Timothy Weah added a third in the 67th minute, followed by Di María's second goal in stoppage time, securing a 4-0 victory.
This defeat left a bitter taste for Monaco, especially as they lost to PSG again three months later in the league, suffering another 4-0 loss at the Stade Louis II, with Edinson Cavani scoring a hat-trick.
Paris: Monaco’s Nemesis?
In finals between the two clubs, PSG has often been Monaco’s nemesis, whether in the Coupe de la Ligue or Coupe de France. Paris triumphed twice in Coupe de la Ligue finals against Monaco, in 2017 (4-1) and 2018 (3-0), with Edinson Cavani scoring braces in both matches. In the Coupe de France, PSG won their last two duels in 2010 (1-0 after extra time with a goal by Guillaume Hoarau) and in 2021 (2-0, with goals from Mauro Icardi and Kylian Mbappé).
Monaco's only victory over PSG in a final dates back nearly 40 years, in May 1985, when Bernard Genghini secured a 1-0 win in the Coupe de France against a PSG side featuring Luis Fernandez, Dominique Rocheteau, and Safet Sušić.
Will history weigh on today’s clash between PSG and Monaco? The answer will come on Sunday.
