BIG BLOW IN IBAGUÉ! Independiente del Valle silences Tolima and takes a valuable Copa Libertadores advantage
An early goal changed everything in Ibagué. Deportes Tolima pushed for a response and even hit the crossbar, but Independiente del Valle held firm to secure a narrow and valuable advantage before the tie is decided in Ecuador.
Joaquín Papa’s team needed only a few minutes to tilt the tie in its favor. Arón Rodríguez struck in the 11th minute to score the only goal of the night, taking advantage of an assist from Emerson Pata and forcing the Colombian side to chase the game for virtually the entire match.
The early blow that changed the game
In the 11th minute, Emerson Pata set up Arón Rodríguez, who made it 0-1 and quickly silenced the Manuel Murillo Toro. The goal allowed the Ecuadorian side to manage the game from a much more comfortable position.
From that point on, the hosts began to take greater control of the ball and enjoyed several spells of possession, although the visitors’ defensive structure managed to limit the truly dangerous chances. Tolima threatened, but lacked the accuracy needed to turn that control into an equalizer.

The crossbar denied Tolima the equalizer
Junior Hernández took a free kick in the 48th minute that crashed against the crossbar, leaving the Colombian side just inches away from leveling the score. It was one of El Pijao’s clearest chances of the entire match.
Hitting the woodwork increased the pressure from the hosts, but Independiente del Valle managed to withstand its opponent’s best spell and maintained the defensive organization it had shown since the first half.
Independiente could have put the tie away
As Tolima pushed more players forward, spaces began to open up for Independiente del Valle to search for a second goal that would have given it an even stronger grip on the tie.
One of the best chances came in the 73rd minute, when Carlos González fired a powerful left-footed shot that forced Neto Volpi to make a save virtually on the goal line to prevent the score from becoming 0-2.
The move confirmed that the Ecuadorian side was not only focused on protecting its lead and could punish Tolima whenever it recovered possession.
The score, however, did not change again.
The tie will be decided in Ecuador
The final whistle confirmed a hugely valuable victory for Independiente del Valle. The 1-0 result gives it the advantage heading into the second leg, while Deportes Tolima will need to mount a comeback away from home if it wants to stay alive in the tournament.
The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25 at Estadio Banco Guayaquil in Quito, where one of the quarterfinalists in the 2026 Copa Libertadores will be decided.
Independiente del Valle will now have the opportunity to build on its work in Ibagué in front of its home supporters. Tolima, meanwhile, will have to find away from home what it could not produce at the Manuel Murillo Toro: the goal that reopens a tie currently tilted in favor of the Ecuadorian side.
