Guillermo Ochoa Warns Javier Aguirre: He Wants Another World Cup!
This Tuesday, Guillermo Ochoa, who once shared a locker room with Rafa Márquez (now Aguirre's assistant with the national team), was introduced by his new club, AVS, in Portugal's Liga.
Ochoa publicly stated that he feels "good, both physically and mentally" and is ready to help his new team as well as the national squad.
Despite receiving offers from less competitive leagues, he chose Portuguese football, as compatriots like Héctor Herrera (formerly of Porto) and Raúl Jiménez (formerly of Benfica) always spoke highly of the "very good level" of the league.
The veteran Mexican international, the same age as Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric, who has also played for clubs like Granada and Málaga, emphasized that he will bring to his new team the "example of hard work," which he considers "the important part of experienced players."
Aiming for his sixth World Cup
Ochoa played his last match for Mexico in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League against the U.S. on March 25, a game they lost 0-2.
Since then, he hasn't been called up, so he's looking to reignite his career in Europe and secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
If called up, the 2026 tournament would mark his sixth consecutive World Cup appearance.
