Sanction for the South Stand of the Metropolitano: Three Matches and a Fine for Atlético
The Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation has imposed a three-match ban without fans in the south stand of the Metropolitano Stadium, affecting sectors 127 to 133. This decision was made after analyzing the report by referee Busquets Ferrer, who documented incidents that occurred during the recent Madrid derby. In addition to the partial closure of the stadium, Atlético Madrid will also have to pay a fine of €45,000.
The sanctioned events include the throwing of several objects from the stands where Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was located. According to the referee's report, three lighters and a water bottle were thrown from the lower part of the south stand in the 64th minute, leading the referee to warn the Atlético delegate twice and temporarily halt the match. Although none of the objects struck Courtois, the safety protocol was activated to prevent a possible definitive suspension of the game.
The sanction will affect matches against Leganés, Las Palmas, and Alavés, which will be played without fans in that area of the stadium. Atlético Madrid has the option to appeal the decision to the Appeals Committee, and if necessary, take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in an attempt to reduce the sanction.
This is not the first time the south stand of the Metropolitano has faced punishment. In the previous season, the same section was closed for two matches due to racist incidents directed at Athletic Club player Nico Williams. However, on that occasion, the sanction was overturned after the identification of the responsible party and the collaboration of the rojiblanco club with the authorities.
