These were Mascherano's first words as Inter Miami's coach and about Messi
Javier Mascherano took over as the new coach of Inter Miami in MLS with humility and optimism, highlighting the "huge" challenge ahead but also his confidence thanks to 20 years of experience in football.
During his presentation in Miami, Mascherano said: "Experience in football doesn’t always mean much. Even though I’ve been coaching for 3 years, my 20 years of playing and everything I’ve lived through back that up." He’s confident that he’ll do a good job in this new role. Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi plays, will be the first club he’ll manage, after coaching Argentina's U-20 national team.
A new challenge and clear goals
Mascherano is replacing his fellow Argentine Gerardo 'Tata' Martino, who left the team after a great regular season but was unexpectedly knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. For the new season, which will include Inter Miami's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, Mascherano made it clear that his goal is to "be in a position to win titles in all competitions," although he was realistic: "It would be hypocritical to come and promise titles. What I can promise is to work hard to make the team competitive."
The Club World Cup challenge
Regarding the Club World Cup, Mascherano pointed out that Inter Miami will face teams that are "much more powerful and with much more history," but he also mentioned that this competition will be a huge opportunity for the club’s growth.
Relationship with Messi and former Barcelona teammates
In his new team, Mascherano will coach several old friends from his time at Barcelona: Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Mascherano said: "It’s not just my relationship with Leo, I have three other players on the team I’ve played with a lot. I have a really close bond with them, and I won’t deny that." During his time at Barcelona, Mascherano won two Champions League titles and five league titles.
