Nürnberg player Niklas-Wilson Sommer was assaulted by his club’s ultras after appearing in a photograph wearing a Bayern Munich shirt.
Nürnberg player Niklas-Wilson Sommer was attacked on the streets of the German city on Sunday night by his club’s ultras after he appeared in a photograph wearing a Bayern Munich shirt.
The right-back, who is also known for his social media presence and large following, posted a photo of his injured face on Instagram, along with a message thanking supporters and the note, "exactly 10 hours ago I was fine."
His club also defended him, stating in a statement that it "will never accept physical attacks on players."
Recently, Sommer had posted a photo on Instagram wearing a Bayern Munich shirt, a team with which Nürnberg has a long-standing rivalry. He later deleted the photo in response to the disrespectful messages he received.
During Saturday's match in Nürnberg against Magdeburg, which ended in a 4-0 loss for the home team, fans displayed signs reading "Club pride instead of hipster pose. Niklas Wilson, you stink like Bayern". The attack occurred just a day later and is currently under investigation by the police.
