Bayern Munich will look to strengthen their grip on the top spot in the Bundesliga this Saturday when they host Borussia Dortmund in the always thrilling Der Klassiker. Holding a six-point lead over their closest challenger, Bayer Leverkusen, the Bavarians know that a win against their longtime rivals could prove crucial in the final stretch of the season.
While Dortmund currently sit eighth in the standings, a staggering 27 points behind the leaders, the clash hasn’t lost its spark. The rivalry built over the years between these two clubs continues to add excitement, regardless of their contrasting form.
Bayern vs Dortmund, with pressure to respond
Both sides come into the match after disappointing results in the Champions League. Vincent Kompany’s team suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Inter Milan, while Niko Kovac’s men were handed a crushing 4-0 loss by Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Despite the setback, Kompany remained upbeat during Friday's press conference:
"It doesn’t feel like a loss yet. There’s a lot of energy and hope for the second leg," said the Belgian manager.
He also pointed out that Bayern have shown strong reactions after negative results this season: "It’s in those moments that we’re probably at our most dangerous," he stated.
However, Kompany will have to deal with several absentees. Injuries will keep key players like Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, Aleksander Pavlovic, Jamal Musiala, and Kingsley Coman out of the clash.
On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund had picked up valuable points in recent weeks with wins over Mainz (3-1) and Freiburg (4-1), which had boosted their hopes of returning to the European qualification spots. But the heavy defeat in Barcelona once again highlighted their inconsistency.
Adding to their troubles is the injury of key defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who will miss the match at the Allianz Arena. Still, Kovac made it clear that his side must give their all: "In Munich, if you don’t give everything, you don’t get anything. Every player has to give their maximum," he said. The return of Pascal Gross to the starting XI after suspension is a positive for the visitors.
Probable lineups:
Bayern Munich: Urbig; Laimer, Dier, Minjae Kim, Stanisic; Kimmich, Goretzka; Olise, Müller, Sané; Kane.
Borussia Dortmund: Kobel; Can, Anton, Bensebaini; Adeyemi, Brandt, Gross, Ryerson; Chukwuemeka; Guirassy, Beier.
Referee: Tobias Welz
Stadium: Allianz Arena, Munich
Everything is set for another thrilling chapter in this historic German rivalry.
