Memphis Depay Will Not Play Against América de Cali
The Dutch football star Memphis Depay and midfielder Igor Coronado will not be playing for Corinthians in their Sudamericana match against America de Cali this Tuesday.
Corinthians announced that Memphis Depay and midfielder Igor Coronado will not be available to play in their second Sudamericana 2025 match due to decisions made by the medical staff.
The two star players underwent medical evaluations after Corinthians’ 3-0 victory over Vasco da Gama during a Brasileirão match. The team’s decision was aimed at preserving the players for future matches due to injuries.
Why Depay and Coronado aren't playing against América de Cali
In the first half of their match against Vasco da Gama, Memphis Depay sustained a knock to his right ankle following a challenge from Lucas Piton. The Dutch star posted on social media a picture of his swollen ankle, protesting against the referee’s decision not to review the incident through VAR.
Depay argued that the referee made an incorrect decision and that the challenge warranted a red card for Lucas Piton, posting a picture of his injury to support his argument.
Igor Coronado sustained an impact on his left shoulder during a challenge from Puma Rodríguez. The team announced the midfielder suffered from an injury trauma, leaving him unfit to go on the pitch this Tuesday.
What will Corinthians do?
Corinthians find themselves in a difficult situation without two of their best-performing players. Since last week, their star midfielder Rodrigo Garro and starting goalkeeper Hugo Souza have also been out due to injuries. Their absence on the field contributed to Corinthians losing their opening Sudamericana match 2-1 against Club Atlético Huracán.
Defender Gustavo Henrique and left-back Fabrizio Angileri will also be out for the match against América de Cali.
Now, manager Ramon Díaz will have to focus on building a strong defense against América de Cali. According to fans and pundits, Corinthians’ defense is often seen as their weakest point.
With the absence of six players for their Sudamericana match, the Brazilian side is expected to adjust their defensive setup to counter América de Cali’s potent attack. They are also expected to rely on squad rotation and focus on securing at least a draw to avoid falling further behind in their group standings.
