Antoine Griezmann Mocks Barcelona After Their Elimination From the Copa Del Rey by Atlético Madrid
After Atlético Madrid secured their place in the Copa del Rey final, Antoine Griezmann shared a provocative social media post aimed at Barcelona that quickly went viral and reignited an old controversy between the French forward and his former club.
Atlético Madrid survive Camp Nou scare to reach the final
Atlético Madrid’s qualification for the Copa del Rey final was far from comfortable. Diego Simeone’s team arrived at the Camp Nou with what seemed like a safe advantage after the emphatic 4–0 win in the first leg, but Barcelona came dangerously close to pulling off a historic comeback.
The Catalan side, now led by Hansi Flick, started the match with intensity and managed to secure a 3–0 victory in the second leg, a result that reignited hope among Barça fans and put the Madrid side under enormous pressure.
For several stretches of the match, Atlético struggled to contain Barcelona’s relentless attacks as the hosts searched for the decisive goal that would level the tie. However, the aggregate score ultimately ended 4–3 in Atlético’s favor, enough to book their spot in the tournament final.
Griezmann posts a message that revives an old controversy
Moments after the match ended, Antoine Griezmann took to social media to celebrate Atlético’s qualification with a post that quickly went viral.
The French forward shared an image of himself celebrating while two Barcelona players lay on the ground visibly devastated after the elimination. However, what truly captured attention was the caption that accompanied the photo.
“Is this photo too harsh?” the striker wrote, adding several emojis, in a message widely interpreted as a direct jab at the Catalan club.
The phrase was no coincidence. In fact, it was a clear reference to a post that Barcelona themselves had shared the previous season.
Griezmann’s “revenge” against his former club
The story behind the message dates back to a 2025 LaLiga match in which Barcelona defeated Atlético Madrid 4–2 at the Metropolitano.
After that game, the club’s official social media accounts posted a celebratory image with a caption that sparked controversy: “This photo goes very hard.”
In the picture, Barcelona players were celebrating while Griezmann appeared defeated in the background, a moment many fans interpreted as a mockery aimed at the French forward.
At the time, Griezmann chose not to respond publicly, but it seems he never forgot the incident.
That is why, following Barcelona’s recent Copa del Rey elimination, the striker decided to return the jab by using the exact same phrase, but with the roles reversed.
An Atlético vs Barcelona rivalry that could add more chapters
Far from ending here, the rivalry between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona may still have several chapters left to be written in the coming weeks.
According to the competition schedule, both teams will face each other again in LaLiga in about a month, a match that now arrives loaded with tension after the Copa del Rey elimination and Griezmann’s controversial post.
