(VIDEO) Vinícius Jr. on Racism: "I’ve Suffered a Lot in Spain"
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior expressed optimism about progress in combating racism in football during an interview with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
The Brazilian star applauded the criminal convictions of three Valencia fans accused of racially abusing him during a match in May 2023 and reiterated his commitment to reducing cases of racism alongside fellow players.
Speaking to the CBF ahead of Brazil's Black Consciousness Day on November 20—a day symbolizing the fight against racial discrimination—Vinícius emphasized the collective nature of the struggle: "I know my importance, but I always say this is everyone’s fight because I can’t face everything Black people suffer on my own."
While acknowledging his leadership role, the player said he’s “happy” to advocate for those who lack the strength or feel afraid to speak out.
In Spain, where Vinícius has played since 2018, he admitted he has "suffered and still suffers" from discriminatory acts. However, he believes the legal consequences faced by the Valencia fans earlier this year could deter future incidents. "Now people will fear being publicly racist," he stated, expressing hope for a decline in such behavior.
Vinícius has been a frequent target of discrimination during his time in Spain. One of the most shocking incidents occurred in January 2023 when a mannequin wearing his jersey was hung from a Madrid highway bridge hours before a Copa del Rey match against Atlético Madrid.
