Gavi Returns to Barcelona After Eleven Months
Barcelona midfielder Pablo Páez Gavira, better known as Gavi, is set to receive medical clearance and will be called up for the LaLiga match against Sevilla, according to coach Hansi Flick. Gavi will return to a team that has undergone quite the transformation during his eleven-month absence.
The 20-year-old from Andalusia suffered a complete tear of his ACL and a related injury to his external meniscus on November 19, 2023, during a match between Spain and Georgia at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid. This was the first serious injury in Gavi’s young career. He made his first-team debut for Barcelona at just 17 years and 24 days under Ronald Koeman on August 29, 2021, in a 2-1 win against Getafe, and has since become a key player in the squad.
After Koeman's dismissal on October 28, 2021, and Xavi Hernández taking over as coach, Gavi quickly established himself as an undisputed starter in midfield and played a major role in Barça’s 2022-2023 La Liga and Supercopa de España titles.
However, the arrival of coach Hansi Flick this past summer has breathed new life into Barcelona. With the notable addition of Dani Olmo and the rise of young talents from La Masia, like Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, and Marc Casadó, the team has adopted a bold, dynamic, and attacking style of play, which has seen them climb to the top of the table.
When asked in a press conference about Gavi, who has been training with the group since mid-September, Flick repeatedly praised his effort and talent but emphasized caution, prioritizing the player’s health to avoid any risk of a setback. "We have to hold him back. He gives his all in training. If all goes well, he'll be ready in the coming days," Barça president Joan Laporta mentioned in a recent interview with Barça One.
Gavi is set to return just in time for a pivotal week that could define Barça’s momentum this season, with matches against Bayern Munich on October 23 and Real Madrid on the 26th.
