Jude Bellingham’s Referee Troubles: Two Red Cards in a Year at Real Madrid
Jude Bellingham once again found himself at the center of controversy after receiving a red card in LaLiga EA Sports, marking his second expulsion since joining Real Madrid. The English midfielder was sent off during the match against Osasuna at El Sadar, just as he was in Mestalla, both times for protesting against referees, raising concerns within the club.
Sent Off for Protesting at El Sadar
In the 39th minute, Bellingham was shown a straight red card after an exchange with referee Munuera Montero. The incident began when Bellingham appealed for a penalty, leading to a confrontation with the official.
"The referee told him to be quiet in English, and after Bellingham’s response, he was shown a straight red card," according to the match report.
The expulsion forced Real Madrid to play with ten men for the entire second half and the final minutes of the first, adding further difficulty in the midst of their Champions League tie against Manchester City.
A Growing Disciplinary Record in LaLiga
This marks Bellingham’s second red card in 76 matches with Real Madrid. His first expulsion came at Mestalla on March 2, 2024, after protesting to referee Gil Manzano, who had disallowed a last-minute goal.
The official match report stated that Bellingham addressed the referee "aggressively and shouting," which resulted in a two-match suspension.
Additionally, Real Madrid has now suffered three red cards in LaLiga this season, all away from the Santiago Bernabéu:
- Ferland Mendy – Matchday 1 vs. Mallorca
- Vinícius Júnior – Matchday 12 vs. Valencia
- Jude Bellingham – Matchday 30 vs. Osasuna
