Militao Successfully Operated: How Long Will He Be Out?
The Real Madrid center-back underwent surgery on Tuesday for his serious knee injury and faces a long recovery ahead.
Brazilian defender Éder Militao underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, along with damage to both menisci in his right knee, sustained on November 9 during the match against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu.
According to Real Madrid, the surgery was performed "successfully" by Dr. Manuel Leyes under the supervision of the club’s medical staff. "He will begin his recovery process in the coming days," the club stated.
Militao was injured 27 minutes into the match while attempting to connect with a set-piece. His knee buckled in the Osasuna penalty area, and he collapsed to the ground in visible pain. His teammates quickly signaled for medical assistance, and the Brazilian center-back was stretchered off.
The international defender previously suffered a serious knee injury to his left knee during the opening match of La Liga last season, on August 12, 2023, at San Mamés. Dr. Leyes also performed that surgery for a torn ACL. Militao made his return to action on March 31 in a league match, coincidentally also against Athletic Club.
This is the second major knee injury for Militao in just 15 months. On this occasion, the damage to his menisci is an additional concern, with an estimated recovery time of approximately nine months, though this detail was not explicitly mentioned in the medical report.
