Unexpected Injury for Ferran Torres: What’s the Diagnosis and How Long Will He Be Out?
Barcelona announced Ferran Torres’ medical report on Tuesday. Tests revealed a muscle injury. He was at his peak form.
FC Barcelona has issued a surprising medical update regarding Ferran Torres. The forward from Foyos sustained an injury during the match against Atlético de Madrid, but only underwent testing this Tuesday to determine the extent of the issue.
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a minor injury in the soleus muscle of his right leg. As a result, Torres will miss the Copa del Rey clash against Barbastro on January 4 but is expected to recover in time for the Spanish Super Cup semifinal against Athletic Club on January 8. The club refrained from providing a specific recovery timeline, stating that "his evolution will determine availability."
A vital contributor regains form
Torres has been pivotal in recent matches, rotating as a center-forward alongside Robert Lewandowski. His performances have been impressive, highlighted by a brace against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and goals against Mallorca and Real Betis. Known for his resilience, Torres is rarely sidelined by injuries, and the club is optimistic about his swift recovery, given the minor nature of the muscle strain.
Hansi Flick’s trust in Torres
Torres has earned the trust of Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who values the player’s mentality, versatility, and work ethic. Often coming off the bench, Torres consistently delivers impactful performances, demonstrating the pressing and tactical discipline Flick demands.
Primarily a right winger, Torres has adapted to various roles, including center-forward—a position he also played at Manchester City and under Luis Enrique for Spain—and left wing, where he featured regularly under Xavi Hernández.
Injury concerns ahead of the Supercopa
Torres joins Lamine Yamal on Barcelona’s injury list, with both players being closely monitored ahead of the Supercopa. The tournament presents an opportunity for Flick’s squad to secure their first title of the season. The Blaugrana will face an in-form Athletic Club on January 8, aiming to advance to the final on January 12.
Meanwhile, long-term absentees Marc-André ter Stegen and Marc Bernal remain sidelined with knee injuries, ruling them out for the remainder of the season. Despite these setbacks, Barcelona is determined to start 2025 on a high note by claiming silverware in Saudi Arabia.
