Bale reveals what Cristiano Ronaldo was really like inside Real Madrid
For years, stories circulated about tension among Real Madrid’s biggest stars. Now, one of the key figures from that era has shared what life inside that legendary dressing room was really like.
Bale clears the air about Real Madrid’s dressing room
During one of the most successful periods in Real Madrid history, the club’s dressing room was filled with global superstars. Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, and Sergio Ramos shared the pitch as the Spanish giants dominated European football.
Over time, many stories emerged suggesting tensions between the team’s biggest personalities. However, Bale recently offered a different perspective during an interview on the The Overlap podcast.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s relentless competitive mentality
The former Welsh forward explained that sharing a team with Cristiano Ronaldo meant playing alongside one of the most competitive players football has ever seen.
“Whether in training or matches, all he wanted to do was score goals. If you didn’t pass him the ball, you noticed it,” Bale said with a laugh while recalling the Portuguese star’s mentality.
According to Bale, that obsession with winning and scoring never created problems inside the team. Instead, it pushed everyone else in the squad to raise their level and maintain an elite competitive standard.
Leadership shared across the squad
Although Cristiano Ronaldo was the main attacking reference on the pitch, Bale explained that leadership within Real Madrid was shared among several key figures.
The Welshman highlighted the role of Sergio Ramos, who as captain served as the main voice in the dressing room and helped balance the many strong personalities within the squad.
Bale also spoke about his relationship with Karim Benzema, describing him as a quieter personality off the field but a crucial player in the team’s attacking structure.
The unusual way free kicks were sometimes decided
Among the anecdotes Bale shared, one of the most surprising involved how the team occasionally decided who would take free kicks.
Most set pieces near the box were taken by Cristiano Ronaldo, but in certain areas of the pitch Bale had priority to take the shot.
The Welshman even joked that sometimes the decision could be settled with something as simple as rock, paper, scissors, reflecting the competitive yet relaxed atmosphere that also existed inside the team.
