Denzel Dumfries says it is an "honour" to be at Real Madrid after linking up with his new team for the first time.

Dumfries joined Madrid from Inter in a deal worth €20m following the Netherlands' exit from the World Cup in July.

He won two Serie A titles with Inter and three Coppa Italia crowns, while also helping them reach two Champions League finals, though they lost on both occasions.

But he is one of three new defensive additions to Jose Mourinho's squad, having followed Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konate into the side.

Dumfries signed a four-year deal with Madrid, and following his extended break due to his World Cup participation – the Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco in the last 32 – he is now settling in at his new club.

"After the first training session, I feel great. After the holidays, I'm happy to get started. It's an honour to be here," he told Realmadrid TV.

"The facilities are incredible. Very big. You can get lost very quickly. They are helping me figure out where everything is.

"I am very proud to be here, to be part of this club. The beginning has gone very well.

"[His team-mates] have welcomed me very well. Some are still on holiday because of the World Cup, but those who are here have made me feel very welcome: the coaching staff, the coach.

"I've felt very well received. We have a great team and a great coach. It's very good to work and learn from them."

Mourinho is preparing for his first season in charge since 2012-13, with the task of ending Madrid's trophy drought after they failed to win any silverware last term.

"I'm very proud and happy to be here," he added when asked if he had a message for the fans.

"We're going to fight for our goals. It's an honour to play for Real Madrid, and we're going to make you proud."
