The late victory of Real Madrid against Celta Vigo continues to spark controversy. This time it was Joan Laporta, candidate for the Barcelona presidency, who publicly criticized the refereeing.
Laporta accuses referees of helping Real Madrid
Laporta suggested that Real Madrid often receives favorable decisions during difficult moments.
“The same thing always happens with Madrid. When they are in trouble, there are refereeing decisions or something always happens,” he said.
“Luck? Everyone would like luck, but they have people who help them have that luck,” the Barcelona presidential candidate added.
Laporta compares it with Real Sociedad vs Barcelona controversy
Laporta also compared the situation with a controversial moment involving Barcelona in Anoeta.
“A Celta player has the ball and gets fouled. The play continues and Madrid scores in the last minute. I believe VAR should have intervened,” he explained.
He referenced a previous match where a Lamine Yamal goal for Barcelona was disallowed because of a prior foul by Dani Olmo.
“That one was called, but yesterday it wasn’t,” Laporta said.
Valverde’s goal that sparked the controversy
The decisive moment came late in the match when Federico Valverde scored with a long-range shot that deflected into the net.
However, before the strike, a sequence caused strong protests from Celta players and fans at Balaídos.
The ball recovery that started the play was made by Real Madrid academy player Manuel Ángel, but replays appear to show a possible foul on Fer López.
Former referee Eduardo Iturralde González analyzed the play and considered it a foul.
“He doesn’t touch the ball and raises his leg to bring down the opponent. It’s a clear foul,” he explained.
