Real Madrid enters the derby with 15 points, two ahead of Atletico's 13, with both teams also trying to keep pace with Barcelona's strong start to the LaLiga season.
Los Blancos have lost only once, a 1-0 defeat to Betis, while Atletico has dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Villarreal and a 3-0 loss at Athletic Club.
Mourinho vs. Simeone: Together again after 12 years
The derby also marks the reunion of Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone, who last faced each other in the Copa del Rey final at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 17, 2013.
It will also be Mourinho's first trip to the Metropolitano since returning to Real Madrid.
Mbappe will be one of Madrid's biggest attacking threats, while Vinicius Junior is also expected to start. Mourinho's biggest question is who will partner Fede Valverde in the double pivot, with Bernardo Silva, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga among the options.

Atletico enters the derby boosted by consecutive wins without conceding, beating Real Sociedad 3-0 and Osasuna 4-0.
Julian Alvarez is available again after missing two matches with an overload issue, although Simeone has yet to decide whether the Argentine will start or Jonathan David will lead the attack.
