Real Madrid will begin its new LaLiga campaign on August 22 against Espanyol, marking the first competitive league match of José Mourinho’s second spell in charge.
Real Madrid will officially begin its 2026/27 LaLiga season on Saturday, August 22, when José Mourinho’s team visits Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. local time. Although the Spanish championship starts one week earlier, the club will be among the teams beginning their campaign later because of the 2026 World Cup calendar.
Why is Real Madrid starting on Matchday 2?
The unusual situation comes from the number of Real Madrid players involved in the latter stages of the World Cup. LaLiga therefore postponed the club’s scheduled Matchday 1 fixture against Real Sociedad.
That game will now take place at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, August 26 at 9:00 p.m. As a result, the Matchday 2 trip to Espanyol four days earlier will actually become Madrid’s first competitive league game of the season.
Mourinho’s second era begins
The match will also carry another major storyline: the return of José Mourinho.
Real Madrid officially appointed the Portuguese coach on June 11, signing him through June 2029. Mourinho previously managed the Spanish giant between 2010 and 2013, winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during his first spell. His return makes the 2026/27 campaign the beginning of a completely new cycle at the club.
The preseason has already offered the first look at his new team. Real Madrid defeated Ferencváros 2-1 in Budapest on August 8, with Mario Rivas and Carlos Espí scoring. Bernardo Silva also made his first appearance during that match, while Vinícius Júnior, Federico Valverde, Arda Güler and Eduardo Camavinga were among the senior players involved.
Three matches in eight days
Once Madrid’s league season begins, there will be little time to settle.
After visiting Espanyol on August 22, the club hosts Real Sociedad four days later in the postponed Matchday 1 fixture. Then, on Sunday, August 30, newly promoted Málaga CF visits the Santiago Bernabéu for Matchday 3.
That gives Mourinho’s team three league matches in only eight days, an immediate test of the squad’s physical condition after an unusual summer.
