Cavani Leaves Boca Juniors and Ends a Trophyless Chapter
The Uruguayan striker has mutually terminated his contract with Boca Juniors, bringing an end to a spell marked by injuries, ups and downs, and no major titles.
Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani has officially ended his time at Boca Juniors after reaching an agreement with the club to terminate his contract, which was set to run until December 2026.
The decision comes as Boca begins a major squad overhaul ahead of the new season. The club's new coaching staff is already working on plans for the upcoming campaign, and reports indicated that Cavani was not expected to play a significant role moving forward.
Cavani arrived in Buenos Aires in July 2023 as one of the most high-profile signings in South American football. He quickly became a key figure and played a crucial role in Boca’s run to the Copa Libertadores final later that year. However, the Argentine giants fell short against Brazilian side Fluminense, missing out on continental glory.
Injuries gradually took a toll on the veteran striker. Throughout 2026, recurring physical issues, particularly a persistent back problem, severely limited his playing time and prevented him from maintaining consistent form. During his Boca career, Cavani appeared in 81 matches, scoring 28 goals and providing three assists. He also wore the captain’s armband on several occasions and became one of the leaders within the dressing room.
His departure follows other notable exits as Boca seeks to rebuild after a disappointing Libertadores campaign. The club will now focus on the Copa Sudamericana, the Clausura tournament and the Argentine Cup, while Cavani considers the next step in his illustrious football career.
