Balogun scores as Monaco Spoil Gattuso's debut
Gennaro Gattuso's debut in charge of Olympique de Marseille ended in defeat against Monaco, who twice leveled an adverse score and prevailed (3-2) to temporarily reclaim the top spot in Ligue 1, pending Brest's Sunday result, with a point and a game in hand, against Nice.
Not even a goal in the first 31 seconds could boost Marseille, who took the lead right at the beginning of the match at the Stade Louis II, courtesy of Iliman Ndiaye's shot, which was as wayward as it was unusual for a goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang provided the assist, and it was much better than the finish, but it somehow found the net despite the goalkeeper Phillip Kohn's stretch.
The 0-1 lead lasted only six minutes. In the 7th minute, Maghnes Akliouche scored the equalizer with a right-footed strike.
Marseille regained the lead after a little over 15 minutes with a great team play finished off by a volley from central defender Samuel Gigot. However, once again, they conceded an equalizer almost immediately, with Balogun finding the net in the 22nd minute.
In the 52nd minute, Maghnes Akliouche sealed Monaco's comeback with a left-footed volley.
Marseille, suffering their second consecutive defeat, now sits five points behind Monaco, who ended a two-game winless streak.
