Messi to Receive an Award From the President of the United States
Lionel Messi is set to receive one of the most prestigious honors of his career. U.S. President Joe Biden will present him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian distinction in the country. This honor not only celebrates his sporting achievements but also his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Leo Messi Foundation and his role as a UNICEF ambassador.
Recognition for his social and sporting contributions
The White House highlighted that Messi was chosen for his successful football career and his contributions to global health and education programs. Through his foundation, Messi has funded educational and healthcare projects in countries like Argentina, Spain, Syria, and Bangladesh, in addition to opening a pediatric oncology center in his hometown, Rosario. He has also worked to promote children's rights and inclusion, particularly in vulnerable contexts.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom was created in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and is awarded to individuals who have made "exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other important social efforts." Over the years, this medal has been presented to notable figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Angela Merkel, Mother Teresa, and athletes like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Simone Biles.
Messi, the first male footballer to receive this honor
Messi will be the first male footballer to receive this distinction, although the former captain of the United States women's national football team, Megan Rapinoe, was honored in 2022. Additionally, Messi becomes the first Argentine to receive this medal, an honor that places him alongside personalities like Hillary Clinton, Magic Johnson, José Andrés, Bono, and Denzel Washington.
With more than 40 trophies, a World Cup title with Argentina, and four Champions League titles, Messi has solidified his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time. However, this award highlights not only his sporting achievements but also his leadership and social commitment.
The award ceremony will take place in the final year of Joe Biden's presidency. In total, 19 individuals will be honored for their contributions to public service, with Messi being one of the most prominent figures to receive this distinction, which celebrates both individual achievements and the positive impact on communities and the world.
