Reus says LA Galaxy's title defence off to worst possible start
The LA Galaxy lost 3-0 to St. Louis City in front of their home fans on Sunday, extending their miserable start to the 2025 MLS season.
Marco Reus believes the LA Galaxy's MLS Cup defence has got off to the worst possible start, with the champions bottom of the Western Conference after three straight losses.
Greg Vanney's team began their 2025 campaign with defeats to San Diego FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps, and things did not get any better against St. Louis City on Sunday.
Cedric Teuchert and Marcel Hartel scored in a five-minute spell either side of half-time to give the Galaxy a mountain to climb at Dignity Health Sports Park, then Simon Becher added some late gloss to the scoreline.
St. Louis had gone 224 minutes without a goal in MLS before arriving in Los Angeles and only had 29.4% of the possession, but they won the expected goals (xG) battle by 1.98 to 1.82 in a deserved victory.
The Galaxy are the first defending MLS Cup champions to ever start the following campaign with three straight losses, and they are also facing the prospect of an early CONCACAF Champions Cup exit after losing 1-0 to Costa Rica's Herediano last week.
"I mean, it's the worst start that we could have. We played four games, we have four losses. Conceded too many goals. We are not scoring many goals. Just one," Reus said.
"We have to find a solution and find the chemistry in our team to build the mentality of winning each game. At the moment, as I said, it's really frustrating."
The Galaxy host Herediano in the second leg of that last-16 tie on Wednesday, and the former Borussia Dortmund man says their fortunes must turn in that game.
"It's a must-win game. We have to score goals on Wednesday," the German added.
"We need good energy in the dressing room in the next few days because we play on Wednesday and then on Sunday again. Things have to turn around."
The Galaxy's next league game is a visit to the Portland Timbers on Sunday, then they are away to Minnesota United the following week.
