Manchester City Fans Outraged Over Ticket Price Increases
Manchester City’s main supporters’ group, City Matters, has sent a letter to club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, voicing concerns over potential ticket price hikes for next season. City already implemented a 5% increase in ticket prices this season, a change announced last May. As a result, fans have started mobilizing early to prevent further increases in season tickets and matchday prices for the upcoming campaign.
A Backdrop of Massive Spending and Financial Controversy
This fan protest comes at a time when Manchester City has spent over €200 million on transfers, surpassing the combined spending of the rest of the Premier League. Additionally, uncertainty remains over the ongoing case regarding the club’s 130 alleged financial breaches.
In their statement, City Matters criticized the club’s ticketing policies: "We believe there is no balance in the club’s ticketing policy. As a result, many fans may be forced out of attending their team’s matches, either because it is financially challenging or because they feel it’s no longer worth the price. Some have already faced this tough decision. The club always emphasizes its connection to the city, and in the latest annual report, Ferran Soriano spoke about his love for Manchester. We ask them not to lose that connection, because what would this club be without Manchester?"
Millions in Profits and Fans’ Demands
The supporters' group reminded that Manchester City has posted profits every season since 2014-2015, except for 2019-2020, which was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"In each of the last two seasons, the club has recorded over £70 million in profits. Given this, we believe they can have their cake and eat it too. They don’t need to squeeze more money out of their loyal fans." For this reason, fans are demanding that the club freeze or reduce ticket prices, ensuring that football at the Etihad Stadium remains accessible to the local community.
