Rúben Amorim claims to be "different from José Mourinho"
Rúben Amorim: "I Am Different from José Mourinho, but the Right Person for Manchester United"
Rúben Amorim, who recently took over as Manchester United's head coach, stated upon his arrival at the English club that he is not like José Mourinho but believes he is the right person to lead the team at this moment.
Amorim, who was managing Sporting CP until a few weeks ago, joined United as a replacement for Erik Ten Hag, who was dismissed after a poor start to the season. His arrival in Manchester has drawn comparisons to Mourinho’s move to Chelsea in 2004.
"Portuguese coaches have proven that we can be the best in the world, but I am different from Mourinho. I remember that time—you saw Mourinho, and you thought he could win everything. But this is not the same situation. He was a European champion; I am not," Amorim said during his first press conference on Friday.
"Football has changed a lot, and I believe I am the right person for this moment. I am young and try to use that to connect better with my players. Mourinho’s young players were names like Lampard; today, the scenario is different," he added.
Amorim also confirmed that Mourinho sent him a message after he was appointed at United, saying it is a great club with incredible people. "He is right. Now, we are building a new project, and I am a different person. I hope to teach the players something new. This is the best club in England, and we want to win—that’s all that matters."
Regarding areas that need improvement, Amorim pointed out that the team loses possession too easily, needs to improve their defensive transitions, and must refine their transfer strategy. "I want to play an essential role in that because I know how I want us to play. I think we need to work on this together, but the manager must have the final say. When everything is aligned, we will be able to buy and sell players with a clear purpose," he concluded.
