Virgil Van Dijk Gives His Verdict on the Transfer Market and Liverpool’s Defense
The Dutch leader of Liverpool's defense spoke about the new signings after the debut.
A promising debut at Anfield
Liverpool kicked off the preseason with a 2-0 victory against Como at Anfield, where the new defensive reinforcements had their first test. Jeremy Jacquet stood out in the first half with a goal and solid statistics, being the player with the most tackles won (three) and the most duels contested (seven). In the second half, Ronaldo Araújo came on in his place and also made a good impression, winning five out of seven duels and adding two recoveries. Cody Gakpo, for his part, was key in opening the scoring and assisting Jacquet for the second goal.
Van Dijk asks for patience and connection
After the match, Virgil van Dijk tempered the euphoria and reminded that the defense needs time to consolidate: "I think Jeremy did well, just like Ronald. It's a start, a good start, so hopefully they can keep it up. Relationships are built by playing matches. I wouldn't say it's the only way, but matches are completely different from training," he pointed out. The captain also spoke about communication within the defense: "Jeremy's English is a bit better than Ronald's, but at the end of the day, we are all good footballers. We can see and sense certain moments about how to defend specific situations. But it is clear that you need to form a connection together and that takes time. In my opinion, it's absolutely normal, but I hope we can achieve it as quickly as possible."
Next challenge
Van Dijk highlighted that Jacquet finished tired after his first 45 minutes, something normal in a debut, and emphasized that the team is already thinking about what comes next: "Tomorrow we return to the field and work for Newcastle. St. James' Park will always be a difficult place." The captain's message is clear, Liverpool has quality in their new signings, but the key will be patience and getting into shape for the defense to become a solid unit.
