Viktor Gyökeres, Portugal’s Top Scorer, Signs With Arsenal After a Historic Season With Sporting
Arsenal has completed one of the most high-profile signings of the summer, securing the services of Viktor Gyökeres, the Swedish striker who lit up the Portuguese League with Sporting CP. The transfer, valued at over €76 million, marks one of the most significant deals in the Lisbon club’s recent history.
According to the official statement filed with Portugal’s Securities Market Commission (CMVM), the deal includes a fixed fee of €65.7 million, with an additional €10.2 million in performance-related bonuses tied to the player's and Arsenal’s achievements.
A prolific scorer arrives in the Premier League
In just two seasons in Portugal, Gyökeres made his mark as the league’s top scorer. During the 2023–2024 campaign, he netted 29 goals, outperforming rivals like Simon Banza from Braga. But it was in the most recent season that he truly exploded, scoring 39 goals, a full twenty more than his nearest challengers, Vangelis Pavlidis and Samu.

Alongside his individual accolades, he helped Sporting win two league titles and one Portuguese Cup, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most complete forwards.
From humble beginnings to international stardom
Born in Stockholm, Gyökeres began his football journey at the modest club Aspudden, before joining the youth academy of Brommapojkarna (BP), one of Sweden’s most respected development clubs. At just 17, he made his first-team debut and, despite the team’s relegation, played a key role in two successive promotions.
His talent caught the eye abroad, and in 2018, Brighton signed him for €1 million. However, he never made a Premier League appearance, going out on loan to St. Pauli and Swansea, before Coventry City in the Championship took a chance on him in 2021. There, his scoring prowess began to shine.
In July 2023, Sporting made a club-record €21 million move for the forward, a fee that initially raised eyebrows. But Gyökeres quickly silenced critics, scoring twice in his league debut.
Now 27, the Swedish striker joins Arsenal with the goal of delivering goals and establishing himself among Europe’s elite. The Premier League awaits, and the Gunners are counting on his finishing instincts to lead them in their quest for silverware.
