Memphis Depay Criticizes His Team After Defeat
Memphis Depay, Corinthians’ marquee signing and one of the most high-profile players in Brazilian football, did not hold back following his team’s 2-0 home defeat to Fluminense.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone at Neo Química Arena, Depay reaffirmed his intention to remain in Brazil and expressed interest in extending his contract, which currently runs until June 2026.
However, his commitment was tempered by pointed criticisms directed at the club’s management, coaching staff, and squad depth.
What Memphis Depay Said About Corinthians
“I love to be here, I want to extend here, but there are things that need to be said,” Depay stated, indicating that his desire to stay is contingent on changes within the club.
The Dutch forward publicly called for Corinthians to strengthen the squad with experienced signings who can guide the younger players. “We need to bring more strength to the team. I hope Corinthians focuses on that. We need more experienced players who read the game and who can teach the younger players,” he said.
Depay’s frustration was evident as he discussed the team’s recent form, which has seen just one victory in six matches since winning the Paulista title. He openly criticized the tactical approach under coach Ramón Díaz and his staff, highlighting the team’s inability to control matches and their tendency to suffer without the ball.
“Sometimes we win 1-0 and but we suffer so much in the game. We concede chances or we don’t have the ball,” he said. “How are we controlling the game so that we can score a second goal, so the team can breathe? No, we always play 1-0 or 2-0, and then 2-1, always with a gun on the head.”
Is Corinthians Improving?
Corinthians found a momentum later last year after Depay’s signing, after going through a tough season. In early 2025, Corinthians had seen itself in an 11-game unbeaten streak and raising its state championship trophy.
But as the Brazilian club saw itself eliminated from the Copa Libertadores and, more recently, has been struggling with the Copa Sudamericana and the Brazilian League, Depay questions if the team has improved at all.
“If you think that because we won the Paulista that we are now the best team in the world, then the reality is we are not. So we have to do better,” Depay said.
“I came here six months ago. Do you think that the team progressed? Or are we just looking at results? I want to know that from Brazil. Are we just looking at Corinthians if we win the game, it’s three points, and then we move on to the next game, or do you see a progressive line? Because I have my doubts,” he added.
Following Depay’s criticism, multiple Brazilian outlets have reported that Argentinian coach Ramón Díaz might soon be fired in efforts to improve the team’s performance.
