Fermin Lopez Warns Against Overconfidence in the Champions League
Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez cautioned that the team will face a "tough atmosphere" at Belgrade's Rajko Mitic Stadium, despite their opponents, Red Star, being one of the underdogs in this Champions League season and yet to score any points.
"We know tomorrow’s match will be tough, against a rival backed by an intense atmosphere, and we're prepared. We'll try to play our game to take all three points," Fermin said before the team's final training session ahead of the Champions League clash.
The midfielder from Huelva acknowledged that the team’s performance dropped in the second half of their La Liga derby against Espanyol, but he’s confident it won’t happen again: "The other day, we relaxed a bit in the second half. The coach pushed us, and I don’t think it'll happen again. The team’s putting in great work, and we need to keep that going."
He credited much of this hard work, especially from the younger players, to their coach, Hansi Flick. "He gives us a lot of confidence and security, and you can see that on the field. Since he arrived, he’s helped us a lot, and we've all improved. This year we’re a very strong team, even though we’re mostly the same players," Fermin pointed out.
The Barça player also highlighted the importance of La Masia, saying it's "very important for Barça" and that no other club gives young players as much of a "spotlight," with Barcelona having "the best academy in the world."
When asked about the intense competition in midfield, Fermin said he's not worried, partly because he’s comfortable playing "in many positions" and is ready to play wherever Flick needs him. His great form recently led him to renew his contract until 2029, a development he’s thrilled about. "Last year, this was unimaginable for me. I hope to stay at Barça for many more years," he concluded.
