Real Madrid, the First Team to Reach 500 European Cup Matches
In the first leg of the Round of 16 against Atlético de Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, the club will play its 500th match in the European Cup, a tournament where it reigns supreme with fifteen titles.
A Historic Milestone in European Football
Real Madrid is set to reach a historic milestone in a special match: the Madrid Derby, now on the Champions League stage.
Real Madrid will become the first club to reach 500 games in the most prestigious club competition in the world. It is the team with the most titles (15 'Big Ears' trophies), the most wins (301, along with 85 draws and 113 losses), and the most goals scored (1,101).
Trailing behind in the all-time standings are Bayern Munich with 404 matches, Barcelona with 357, Juventus with 311, and Benfica with 302. In terms of titles, Real Madrid stands alone as Europe's undisputed king, followed by Milan (7), Bayern Munich and Liverpool (6), Barcelona (5), and Ajax (4).
A Journey Filled With Glory
Real Madrid's European Cup journey began on September 8, 1955, with a 2-0 victory at Charmilles Stadium in Geneva against Servette of Switzerland, with goals from Miguel Muñoz and Héctor Rial. It took 17 years to reach 100 matches, which happened on March 7, 1973, in a goalless draw against Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, in the first leg of a quarterfinal tie that was later decided at the Bernabéu.
The 200th match came at home with a 3-1 win over Porto, while the 300th arrived in September 2007 with a 2-1 victory against Werder Bremen, with goals from Raúl and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The 400th match was also a triumph, a 5-1 win over Legia Warsaw on October 18, 2016, at the Bernabéu, with goals from Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Lucas Vázquez, Álvaro Morata, and an own goal by Tomasz Jodłowiec.
Real Madrid holds several European Cup records: it is the team with the most tournament appearances (44), the most finals played (18), and the most titles won (15). After winning the first five editions consecutively between 1955 and 1960, the club is currently enjoying one of its greatest eras, having claimed six Champions League trophies in the last decade.
