Santiago Bernabéu Under Scrutiny: UEFA Imposes Partial Closure and Fine on Real Madrid
The Santiago Bernabéu has come under the UEFA spotlight following the incidents during the second-leg match of the Champions League against Manchester City. UEFA’s Appeals Body has decided on a partial closure of the iconic stadium, with the sanction being suspended for two years. If similar discriminatory behavior occurs again, the punishment will be enforced immediately.
The measure entails the closure of at least 500 seats for the next home game the Real Madrid plays in a European competition, should another similar infraction take place. Additionally, the club has been fined €30,000, a penalty that reflects the seriousness of the events during the match.
However, UEFA did not specify in their official report the exact incident that triggered the decision. It is known, though, that the body applied article 14.2 of its Disciplinary Regulations, which penalizes any discriminatory conduct within stadiums.
On its part, Real Madrid has yet to issue an official statement regarding the ruling, although in similar situations, the club has defended its fans' behavior and avoided direct responsibility. However, with this firm warning, the board will have to take steps to prevent incidents that could trigger the sanction.
This decision is a major blow to the club’s image and the stadium, which has recently been renovated and is considered one of the most modern sports venues in the world. A partial closure of the Bernabéu during a European night would not only affect the team on the field but also have economic and reputational repercussions for the club internationally.
With the sanction suspended, Real Madrid will need to be closely monitored during their upcoming European matches. If the fans repeat their behavior, the Santiago Bernabéu will face a penalty that would set an important precedent in UEFA's discipline.
