A goal by captain Marcel Sabitzer in the 81st minute gave Austria a 3-2 win over the Netherlands and secured the top spot in Group D of EURO 2024, ahead of France and the Netherlands.

Austria took an early lead in the 6th minute with an own goal by Donnyell Malen. At the start of the second half, in the 47th minute, the Netherlands equalized with a goal from Cody Gakpo.

The Austrians regained the lead in the 56th minute with a header from Romano Schmid. Memphis Depay equalized again for the Netherlands in the 76th minute, but Sabitzer decided the match.

With this result, Austria advances as the group leader with six points, leaving France in second place with five points and the Netherlands in third with four points (still managing to qualify as one of the best third-place teams).

Austria makes history by finishing first in an official tournament for the first time since 1978, in the World Cup, where they topped a group with Brazil, Scotland, and Iran.
