The Marseille team doctor’s biggest concern this week was how well the club’s players recovered from a mass dose of self-inflicted shin-kicking that took place at the final whistle of last week’s match against Toulouse.
Marseille was leading 2-1 at home against their rivals and were heavily into injury time. The players were just seconds away from taking advantage of PSG’s loss against Monaco the previous day to leapfrog their rivals into the first place in the standings. Celebrations all round.
And yet.
And yet, Marseille contrived to let in an equalizer from Toulouse to leave the normally boisterous Velodrome crowd completely dumbstruck.
"We need to understand why we concede these goals at the end, and so often,” admitted the club’s Italian coach, Roberto de Zerbi.
Una nueva oportunidad de escalar… pero nada sencilla
With Marseille playing on Friday, a day ahead of table-topping Lens and second-placed PSG, there is another chance for Marseille to move into prime position with a win.
However, it’s a tall order, as Marseille are traveling to face a Lille side that is just one place behind them in the standings and on the hunt for a third victory in a row in Ligue 1.
