Burnley batters Wednesday to extend record run
Burnley is now 21 games unbeaten after beating Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in their EFL Championship match at Turf Moor.
The result was also a 12th straight clean sheet for the Clarets in the competition and moved it just two points behind second-placed Sheffield United, which takes on leader Leeds United in a top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday (AEDT).
While the scoreline looked emphatic here, it was the Owls that had the better of the early exchanges and indeed ended the match with more shots than the hosts, 11 to seven.
But missed opportunities proved costly just before half-time when Marcus Edwards, having hit the crossbar with an earlier effort, jinked his way through the Wednesday defence to open the scoring from close range on 43 minutes.
Burnley took a firmer grip after the break, and Josh Brownhill found the net with his first touch having come off the bench just after the hour mark.
Connor Roberts made certain of the points with 20 minutes to go before Manuel Benson fired home the pick of the goals in second-half stoppage-time, a thunderous drive from outside the box that nestled neatly in the top-right corner.
Burnley sits third on the Championship table now with 68 points, two shy of Sheffield United in second and four behind Leeds at the top.
For Wednesday, it was a third defeat in its past five matches, and left it clinging to 10th place on the table.
Elsewhere, Bristol City boosted its own hopes of promotion as it moved into the top six with a 2-1 comeback win over Middlesbrough.
Tommy Conway had given Boro a first-half lead, pouncing on the rebound of Kelechi Iheanacho's saved shot after Bristol City had wasted chances.
However, Liam Manning's triple change on the hour mark did wonders for the Robins.
West Ham United loanee George Earthy scored his first goal for the club, latching on to fellow substitute Cameron Pring's cross.
His second Bristol City goal was not far behind as he completed the comeback, staying alert after Scott Twine's free-kick cannoned off the post, turning it into the empty net.
Bristol City moved up to sixth, having recorded a sixth home win in seven games, while Boro's misery continued as a fifth straight league defeat left it down in 11th.
