Egypt reach World Cup knockout rounds as Iran denied late winner
Egypt secured their place in the World Cup knockout rounds after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Iran in Seattle, where a stoppage-time winner for the Iranians was ruled out following a VAR review.
Shoja Khalilzadeh thought he had snatched all three points when he fired home after Egypt failed to clear their lines deep into added time.
However, celebrations were cut short after the goal was ruled out for offside, and the final whistle moments later left Iran's players sprawled across the pitch in disbelief.
Despite the draw, Iran remain in contention to qualify as one of the tournament's eight best third-placed teams.
The match had begun at a frantic pace, with Egypt taking the lead after just five minutes.
Mahmoud Saber finished calmly to give the Pharaohs an early advantage after learning before kick-off that results elsewhere had already secured their place in the Round of 32 for the first time in the nation's history.
Iran responded immediately and were handed a chance to equalise five minutes later when Mehdi Taremi won a penalty.
The striker, however, failed to convert before Ramin Rezaeian restored parity moments later with a well-taken finish from a tight angle.
Taremi came close to completing the turnaround in the closing stages, heading against the crossbar before Khalilzadeh believed he had won it in stoppage time.
Egypt introduced Omar Marmoush after the interval in search of greater attacking impetus, and the Manchester City forward almost made an immediate impact when his curling effort was deflected behind.
Mohamed Salah was withdrawn shortly before the hour mark, appearing frustrated as he made way for Zizo, although Egypt's attention now turns to a Round of 32 meeting with Australia.
For Iran, hopes of automatic qualification were extinguished by the narrowest of margins, but their World Cup dream remains alive heading into the race for the best third-placed teams.
