Terremoto sorprende a la LMBP
A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck during the game between Marineros and Senadores in the Venezuelan Major Professional Baseball League (LMBP) at the Estadio Universitario de Caracas, forcing officials to suspend play and immediately activate emergency procedures.
The television broadcast captured every second of the incident. What began as barely noticeable vibrations quickly escalated into a tense situation as players, umpires, and thousands of fans realized the movement was far more serious than expected. Within moments, the baseball diamond stopped being a sports venue and became a safe gathering point where protecting lives took priority over the game.
The Moment Baseball Took a Back Seat
During the early stages of the game, the first tremors went largely unnoticed by many inside the stadium. As the shaking intensified, however, everyone reacted almost instantly.
Williams Cacique, who was at the plate, and the home plate umpire were among the first to recognize that something unusual was happening. Seconds later, players from both dugouts rushed onto the field, following emergency procedures.
Videos shared across social media and the official broadcast showed speakers, light poles, and nearby buildings visibly swaying as the game came to a halt. According to reports citing the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.1, prompting stadium officials to immediately implement safety protocols.
Emergency Protocols Took Over the Stadium
Stadium officials allowed spectators to leave the grandstands and move onto the playing field, considered a safer open space in case of structural damage or falling debris. The decision helped maintain order while thousands of people reacted to an event that unfolded in just seconds.
Meanwhile, players from both teams gathered near the center of the field awaiting further instructions. The game was officially suspended as a precaution, and additional league games scheduled for later in the day were also called off.

The Earthquake's Impact Extended Far Beyond the Stadium
According to preliminary reports cited by multiple news outlets, the powerful quake caused significant structural damage across Caracas and several other Venezuelan cities. Authorities also reported disruptions to communications, electricity, and other essential services in multiple regions, while a precautionary tsunami alert was issued for parts of the Caribbean.
Officials urged residents to remain in open areas because of the possibility of aftershocks, as emergency crews began assessing damage and assisting affected communities.
