The Cost of Checo Pérez's Departure for Red Bull
The exit of Sergio 'Checo' Pérez from Red Bull Racing not only leaves a gap in the team’s lineup but also comes with a significant financial cost. According to Marca, terminating the Mexican driver's contract will cost Red Bull approximately €14 million (around $15 million USD), corresponding to the two years remaining on his deal, which was set to run through 2026.
Pérez, who served as the second driver behind Max Verstappen, agreed to part ways with the team after a challenging 2024 season, where he finished eighth in the drivers' standings and failed to secure any victories. Despite rumors of internal disagreements, both parties reached a mutual agreement to end their professional relationship early.
Checo's Future: From F1 to WEC
According to reports, Checo Pérez is set to continue his racing career in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), competing in the Hypercar category, one of the most competitive and thrilling arenas in motorsport. This move marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Mexican driver, as he transitions from Formula 1 to a different but equally demanding discipline.
In addition to the €14 million severance payment, Red Bull will face indirect costs related to Pérez’s departure:
- Adapting his Replacement: Red Bull has promoted Liam Lawson, the young New Zealander, to take over Pérez’s seat. The team will need to invest in his development and ensure he integrates smoothly into the highly competitive environment alongside Max Verstappen.
- Damage Costs: During the 2024 season, Pérez was the driver with the highest repair costs, accruing nearly $5 million in damages to his car.
