The British team Williams Racing has announced that Argentine driver Franco Colapinto will replace American Logan Sargeant for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

"Replacing a driver mid-season isn’t a decision we’ve taken lightly, but we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points for the remainder of the season," said James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, in an official statement.

Colapinto, a member of the Williams Racing Driver Academy, made his debut in this year's first practice session at the British Grand Prix. He'll now become the second Argentine driver to race for the English team, following in the footsteps of Carlos Reutemann.

“It’s an honor to make my Formula 1 debut with Williams. This is a dream come true. The team has an incredible history and a mission: to get back to the top, and I’m excited to be a part of that,” Colapinto said after the official announcement.

The 21-year-old called joining the team mid-season "a huge learning experience" but assured that he’s "ready for the challenge."

"We’ve just made a significant upgrade to the car, and we need to maximize every opportunity to score points in what’s been a fiercely competitive midfield battle," Vowles said about the driver change. He added that "Franco has great speed and immense potential, and we’re eager to see what he can do in Formula 1."
