Oscar Piastri (McLaren) took advantage of the battle for the championship between his teammate, British driver Lando Norris (McLaren), and Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) to win the Hungarian GP and secure his first F1 victory. He had to wait until two laps before the end when Norris finally gave up the lead to his teammate.

Norris, who had taken the lead 25 laps from the end after a pit stop before Piastri (the leader until then), spent 20 laps ignoring his team's messages to give up the position. He eventually did so, cutting ten points from Verstappen, who finished fifth after a clash with British driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).

Hamilton completed the podium, while Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) missed out, finishing sixth. His fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) ended up outside the points in eleventh place after being overtaken by Mexican Sergio “Checo” Pérez (Red Bull), who made a great comeback from ninth to finish seventh.

McLaren's dominance, which led them to remind Norris that winning the championship would need "the team and Piastri," marks a shift in the season's thirteenth race, where Norris is now challenging Verstappen's dominance.
