Red Bull Replaces Lawson with Tsunoda Ahead of Japanese GP
Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda will take over as an official Red Bull driver starting from the Japanese Grand Prix, replacing New Zealander Liam Lawson, who will return to Racing Bulls, the team he raced for last season.
The decision was announced on Thursday, with the team citing Lawson’s struggles to adapt. He failed to score points in the first two races of the season, crashing in Melbourne and finishing 12th in Shanghai.
Horner and Mekies Explain the Move
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner admitted it was tough watching Lawson struggle with the RB21, prompting an early lineup change. "Our goal for 2025 is to retain the Drivers' Championship and reclaim the Constructors' title. Tsunoda’s experience will be crucial for car development," he explained.
Meanwhile, Racing Bulls boss Laurent Mekies praised Tsunoda's progress and expressed pride in his promotion. "His improvement has been outstanding. His energy and positivity have been vital for the team," he said, adding that they will ensure Lawson has the best environment to continue growing in Formula 1.
The Japanese Grand Prix, the third race of the 2025 season, is set for April 6 in Suzuka, where Tsunoda will make his Red Bull debut alongside reigning world champion Max Verstappen.
