FIFPRO's 2024 Team of the Year Announced with Vinicius, Mbappé, and Haaland, but No Lamine Yamal
The FIFPRO 2024 Team of the Year was announced this Monday, featuring standout names like Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland. However, the absence of Lamine Yamal came as a surprise, as he didn’t make the cut. The team, chosen by 28,000 players from 70 countries, also includes big names like Rodri Hernández, midfielder for Manchester City, and Dani Carvajal, right-back for Real Madrid.
Strong Presence from Real Madrid and Manchester City
In the XI, six players come from Real Madrid and four from Manchester City. Rodri, who recently won the Ballon d'Or, and Carvajal were key in their teams’ recent victories, while players like Rudiger, Bellingham, Kroos (now retired), and Vinicius Jr. shone in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Spanish Super Cup under Carlo Ancelotti. Mbappé, though now at Real Madrid, had to settle for domestic titles.
Ederson (goalkeeper for Manchester City) and Rodri make their debut in the FIFPRO XI, as well as Antonio Rudiger and Carvajal. Virgil van Dijk (from Liverpool) enters for the fourth time. As for absences, Leo Messi stands out, not being included in the Team of the Year for the first time since 2006, after being selected 17 times before. The team was selected based on player performances between August 21, 2023, and August 10, 2024, provided they played at least 20 official matches. This is the only global football award decided solely by players.
