'We won't make it something big' – Alonso addresses Boniface-Buendia confrontation
Victor Boniface and Emiliano Buendia were involved in a remarkable bust-up on Saturday, but Xabi Alonso will not dwell on the incident.
Xabi Alonso has spoken to Victor Boniface following his confrontation with Emiliano Buendia and says Bayer Leverkusen will not make more of the incident than is necessary.
Leverkusen moved back to within eight points of the Bundesliga summit with a 4-1 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, scoring three goals in the space of seven first-half minutes.
But their victory was overshadowed by an incident involving Nigeria international Boniface and loanee Buendia in second-half stoppage time.
Boniface lashed out at the Argentine – who joined from Aston Villa in January – after they got in each other's way in an advanced position and had to be calmed by his team-mates.
Alonso has revealed he has addressed the incident with Boniface, who was the subject of a failed €70million transfer bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the recent transfer window.
"I spoke with Boni," Alonso said at his post-game press conference. "I don't have all the details, but Boni wanted to shoot, it can happen.
"We don't want to make something big out of something so small. We're staying calm. On Monday we'll keep going again."
Boniface has 10 goals in all competitions this campaign but has largely played a back-up role due to the form of Patrick Schick, who has 22 goals.
Boniface has only started 14 times in all competitions this term, making 20 appearances overall.
Leverkusen are next in action in the Champions League on Wednesday, when they face domestic rivals Bayern Munich in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
