Espérance de Tunis Held in Their Debut and Raises Concerns in the African Champions League
The CAF Champions League kicked off its group stage with mixed results, including one particularly striking outcome in Tunisia: a scoreless draw between Espérance de Tunis and Stade Malien, a match that left more questions than answers for one of the continent’s giants. The 0-0 at Stade Hammadi Agrebi reflected the Tunisian side’s lack of attacking clarity, unable to break down the Malian team’s defensive structure.
Espérance dominates but can’t find the goal
For long stretches of the match, Espérance de Tunis controlled possession, circulated the ball patiently and pushed numbers into the attacking half. However, they failed to turn territorial dominance into clear scoring chances. The visitors’ back line, disciplined and well organized, closed down spaces and forced the hosts into long-range shots or inaccurate crosses.
The Tunisian frustration was evident in the bookings shown to Jelassi and Bode, two cautions that added to a tense and disjointed finish. Despite their late efforts, including several balls lofted into the box, the score didn’t change, leaving Espérance with a bitter feeling to start the tournament.
Stade Malien impress with defensive structure and discipline
On the other side, Stade Malien executed an almost flawless plan. The Malian side conceded possession, dropped deep and relied on a handful of transitions, but their priority was clear: protect their goal at all costs. Their tactical discipline allowed them to withstand Espérance’s pressure and neutralize attempts from the wings.

As the minutes passed, the visitors grew more comfortable and slowed the tempo of the match. Smart substitutions helped maintain defensive intensity and secure a valuable point, especially considering the challenge of playing in Rades against one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.
With this draw, Espérance opens Group D with doubts and the urgent need to adjust their attacking approach to avoid trouble in the race for qualification. For Stade Malien, however, the 0-0 is a boost of confidence and a clear message: they won’t be an easy opponent in this year’s tournament.
