Mamelodi Sundowns Win CAF Champions League Title
Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned champions of the CAF Champions League after earning a 1-1 draw against AS FAR in Rabat. Thanks to their 1-0 victory in the first leg in Pretoria, the South African side lifted the continental trophy for the second time in club history.
A Dramatic Finish in Rabat
The home team came out aggressively in search of a comeback and found their reward in the 40th minute, when Mohamed Rabie Hrimat leveled the aggregate score from the penalty spot. However, just as it seemed the first half would end with momentum favoring the Moroccan side, Teboho Mokoena struck in stoppage time to silence the stadium and restore calm for “Bafana ba Style.”
In the second half, the squad led by Alexandre Santos pushed forward relentlessly in search of the equalizer that would force extra time. Nevertheless, the defense of Mamelodi Sundowns stood firm against every attack while waiting for a counterattack opportunity to seal the match.
In the 75th minute, it appeared that the efforts of AS FAR would finally pay off after the referee awarded another penalty to the hosts. Once again, Mohamed Hrimat stepped up, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as the hero with a spectacular save that kept the South Africans alive and brought them even closer to the title.
Ronwen Williams Leads Sundowns to Glory
Williams was the standout player of the final. In addition to saving the penalty, he produced several decisive stops, including a brilliant save in the 71st minute following an impressive solo play by Ahmed Hammoudan.
Deep into stoppage time, in the 94th minute, Mamelodi Sundowns thought they had scored the goal that would ignite full celebrations, but the referee disallowed the strike for offside. Even so, there was no time left for more drama, and the South African club sealed its continental triumph.
With this victory, Mamelodi Sundowns completed a memorable campaign and secured their second CAF Champions League crown. Their first title came in 2016, when they defeated Egypt’s Zamalek in the final.
