Why Edinson Cavani’s Return Is Crucial for Boca Juniors Against Alianza Lima in Copa Libertadores
Boca Juniors must overturn a first-leg deficit in the second phase of the Copa Libertadores, a crucial hurdle to rejoin the continental competition after a one-year absence.
In this decisive moment of the season, Boca could regain a key player: Edinson Cavani. With his experience and quality, the Uruguayan striker could be vital in the second leg against Alianza Lima.

Why Is Edinson Cavani’s Return So Important?
Beyond his physical condition, Cavani's presence is crucial for Boca. He has been the team’s top scorer at La Bombonera in recent years, and his ability to perform in decisive matches makes him a key asset. His leadership in the locker room also plays a vital role.
Since joining Boca in 2023, Cavani has played 58 matches and scored 24 goals, becoming the club’s fourth-highest-scoring Uruguayan in history.
What Did Gago Say About Cavani’s Return?
Following Boca’s 2-1 victory over Aldosivi, coach Fernando Gago addressed Cavani’s status in a press conference.
"He has to manage the pain; it’s up to him. We’ll see on Monday what decision he makes," Gago said. The injury causes discomfort in training, and Cavani himself will decide whether to play through the pain, receive an injection, or sit out.
What Injury Has Cavani Been Dealing With?
Boca’s medical team recently reported that Cavani is suffering from "a post-traumatic bone edema associated with a non-displaced fracture of the left L3 transverse process. Treatment focuses on pain management and rehabilitation."
His recovery timeline remains uncertain. He will be evaluated daily, and his availability depends on his pain tolerance. While his return to training signals his intent to play against Alianza Lima, there is no guarantee he will feature. Ultimately, the coaching staff will decide whether to risk him.
How Did Cavani Get Injured?
Cavani has been dealing with lumbar pain and even played through discomfort against Racing. SportsCenter footage shows that in the previous match against Huracán, he suffered a heavy fall on his back, causing the injury. Despite the pain, he remained on the field and was only substituted near the end of the game.
So far in the Torneo Apertura, Cavani has started three of Boca’s first four matches and scored once. In the previous semester, he netted nine goals in 22 appearances.
