The Club World Cup Revolutionizes the Transfer Market in LaLiga and the Premier League
The Premier League and La Liga have authorized the opening of a transfer window to make signings before the Club World Cup
It’s still a few months before the ball starts rolling at the 2025 Club World Cup. However, little by little, details that will influence how the tournament is approached are being revealed. This week, FIFA revealed that the prize money amounts to 1 billion dollars, a sum large enough to reconsider some modifications to the usual transfer market development.

Clubs will be able to sign players before the Club World Cup
The first league to join this initiative and speak out about the changes it will make ahead of the Club World Cup was the Premier League, which approved that its 20 clubs can sign players before next July 1st. This situation will benefit Chelsea and Manchester City, the two clubs participating in the Club World Cup, when it comes to making transfers or recalling players from loan.
This additional transfer window for the Premier League will open on June 1st and last until the 10th of that same month. That is, four days before the Club World Cup begins. Just six days later, with the tournament already underway, another transfer window will reopen, which, as usual, will last until August 30th… and not until the 14th as some clubs had tried to propose.
FIFA authorizes the creation of short-term contracts like in the NBA
La Liga, finally, has also joined this proposal approved by FIFA last October. “We approved it today in a Club Assembly. We made a special one for this,” confirmed La Liga president, Javier Tebas. Just like the Premier League, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will be able to sign players to face the Club World Cup between June 1st and June 10th.
That said, there are still details to resolve that could shake up the transfer market. This is especially the case for players whose contracts expire on June 30th. In other words, in the middle of the Club World Cup tournament. In this case, there’s a legal loophole that could mean players might be playing in the decisive stages of the tournament without a valid contract with the club they belong to. In this case, FIFA has also allowed the signing of short-term contracts similar to those in the NBA.
