Barcelona Says No to Nico Williams, Once Seen as Yamal’s Perfect Partner
The impressive performance of FC Barcelona under Hansi Flick has led to an unexpected shift in the club's plans for the 2025-26 season. With a realistic chance of fighting for the treble (LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League), the sporting management has started to shape its future strategy, making decisions that differ from what was previously outlined.
One of the most significant changes is the decision to rule out signing a new striker, something that was seen as a priority due to Robert Lewandowski’s physical decline. However, the strong form of players like Ferran Torres and the interest in bringing in Dani Olmo have convinced the club that the position is well covered, even if neither is a traditional No. 9. Both act as false nines and offer dynamism in the final third—something Flick highly values.
Another move that has been taken off the table is the signing of Nico Williams. Last summer, the Athletic Club winger was a top target for Barça, even regarded as the perfect partner for Lamine Yamal, creating balance and danger on both flanks.
However, club sources now believe that the opportunity to sign him has passed. His €60 million release clause and the emergence of internal alternatives have led Barça to abandon the pursuit. The club feels it already has enough depth on the left wing and that resources should be focused elsewhere.
Barcelona’s New Transfer Targets
With that in mind, Barça's current transfer priorities are to strengthen the midfield and the defense. The club aims to bring in a playmaker capable of dictating tempo and a defender, preferably a right-back, though a center-back could be considered depending on potential departures.

Recent decisions, like the renewal of Iñigo Martínez—despite earlier plans to part ways with him due to Financial Fair Play restrictions—show that the sporting leadership is willing to adapt as the season progresses, especially when team performance justifies it.
Barcelona is clearly committed to building a stronger squad without excessive spending, focusing on continuity, young talent, and key reinforcements to remain competitive at the highest level without compromising the club's financial stability.
